CARNAVAL DE HUEJOTZINGO 2013

En el 2012 previo a mudarme a Oaxaca, tuve la oportunidad de ir por primera vez al carnaval de Huejotzingo, Puebla donde participan más de 12 mil danzantes durante los 4 días que dura. Este es sin duda uno de los carnavales más importantes de México y es por eso que este año no quería perderme la oportunidad de regresar y hacer fotos de esta fiesta llena de alegría, música y MUCHA polvora.

Blanco y negro Vs. Color

Me han preguntado por qué en eventos tan coloridos hago fotos en B/N. La razón es la siguiente.
Por lo general cuando trato de contar una historia a través de mis fotos prefiero presentarlas en blanco y negro para:

• Resaltar más las expresiones y los detalles.
• Que luzcan atemporales.
• Añadirles misticismo y drama.
• Que más simples.

En ocasiones para mi el color se convierte en un distractor que hace que el mensaje que quiero dar se pierda y sólo se traduzca sólo en una foto "bonita". En este caso mi intención es mostrar fotografías interesantes con mejor lectura.

 Before I moved back to Oaxaca, I had the chance to attend for the first time to the Huejotzingo's carnival, one of the largest in Mexico where more than 12,000 dancers performs during 4 days. So this year I didn't want to miss the chance to return and take more pictures and witness this celebrations of joy, music and a LOT of gunpowder.

Black and White Vs. Color.
 

Some people had been asking me why do I prefer black and white when these celebrations are colorful. My answer is this. 

Most of the time when I'm trying to tell a story with my photographs I rather prefer them to be B&W in order to: 

• Stand up the expressions and the details.
• Give a timeless look.
• Add drama
• Be more simple.

I also consider that sometimes the color is a big distraction, it won't let the story to be told properly and turns it into a "nice" photo. In those case I want to show interesting photographs with a whole better lecture.

V ANIVERSARIO DEL MUSEO TEXTIL DE OAXACA

El viernes 19 de abril el Museo Textil de Oaxaca celebró su V aniversario realizando un recorrido por las calles del centro donde se podían apreciar diferentes tipo de vestimentas que han sido exhibidas durante sus cinco años. Mucha gente se fue uniendo a esta celebración que partió del Jardín Etnobotánico para dirigirse hasta el museo al ritmo de sones y jarabes que interpretaba la banda al frente de dicho recorrido.

Este es sin duda uno de mis espacios favoritos de la ciudad ya que tiene exhibiciones muy interesantes y funje como excelente punto de encuentro entre tradiciones, diseño y arte contemporáneo.

Recomiendo ampliamente visitar el Museo Textil de Oaxaca que se localiza en la calle de Hidalgo 917 en el centro de Oaxaca, a dos cuadras del Zócalo.

On April 19th, the Oaxaca's textile museum celebrated it's 5th anniversary with a walk through the streets of the city using different traditional dresses that were on display during the 5 years. It all started at the botanical garden with a music band that leaded to the museum.

Without a doubt this is one of my favorite places of town that combines tradition, culture and contemporary art in all of their excellent exhibitions.

I highly recommend to visit this museum when coming to Oaxaca, it's located on Hidalgo 917 just 2 blocks from the Zócalo.

LOMO 34 · FILM PHOTOGRAPHY DAY

Film Photography Day is a celebration of unplugging from the digital grind that surrounds us in our daily lives, a call to arms to switch off and begin rediscovering the magic and surprises of analogue.

April 12th 2013 will be the official Film Photography Day across the world and I wanted to celebrate it posting these lomography photographs where I'm having fun with friends. :D

PROCESIÓN DEL SILENCIO pt I

 

Estas fotografías las realicé el Viernes Santo durante la Procesión del Silencio de la Ciudad de Oaxaca, México. Desde 1986 se realiza año con año, reuniendo a una gran cantidad de participantes que se concentran en el Templo Sangre de Cristo para alistarse y recorrer las principales calles del centro histórico donde miles de turistas y locales atestiguan esta peculiar e imponente procesión.

¿Cuál es el origen del capuchón?
El origen del capirote o capuchón está en los comienzos de la Inquisición, cuando a las personas que estaban castigadas por motivos religiosos se les imponía la obligación de usar una prenda de tela que les cubriera el pecho y la espalda y un cucurucho de cartón en señal de penitencia.

I did these photographs on Holly Friday during the "Procesión del SIlencio (Silent procession) in Oaxaca Mexico. Year by year since 1986 thousands of people gathers around to Sangre de Cristo church to eyewitness this tradition that takes part along the main streets of downtown Oaxaca.
Each church is represented by a holy figure carried by the faithful. Banners, on heavy standards, are part of the procession, as well as crosses carried by others. Unlike almost everything else in Mexico, the procession is actually mostly silent. 

CARNAVAL DE ZAACHILA 2013

Gary y Cheche pasaron por mi, era la primera vez que iban al carnaval de Zaachila en Oaxaca, yo fui el año pasado a hacer fotos sólo que llegamos muy temprano y decidimos ir a comer algo antes para estar listos en cuanto el carnaval diera inicio. Fuimos primero al lugar donde la comparsa de "Amigas y rivales" (travestis) se estaban alistando, después de un par de horas llegó la banda de música que las acompañaría hasta la parroquia donde se unirían con toda la gente que estaba ahí reunida así como una gran cantidad de "diablos" que hacían de las suyas.

Los "diablos" son hombres (niños y adultos) que portan un disfraz especial que los cubre prácticamente de pies a cabeza para no ser identificados ya que irán por todo el pueblo rociando harina a las muchachas que consideren atractivas, en recompensa, ellas recibirán (en al mayoría de los casos) un cascarón de huevo decorado con papel multicolor.

Algunos jóvenes que tienen novia, ya tiene listo para ellas una "Lira" que consta de varios cascarones decorados, con un pañuelo de tela que lleva bordado una frase de amor, todo esto montado sobre una toronja (o pomelo).
Música, puestos de comida, juegos mecánicos y bailes complementan el carnaval que dura hasta ya entrada la madrugada.

A la hora de retirarnos los 3 acordamos para el año entrante regresar al carnaval pero esta vez rentar cada quien por $60 (USD $4.5) un disfraz de diablo. :)

This year I returned to the carnival of Zaachila in Oaxaca, México to take pictures with two really good friends, it was their first time. We got there quite early so we decided to have lunch before anything else.

Afterwards we went to a place where some transvestites were getting ready, 2 hours later the musicians arrived to that place and they walked and danced along all the way to the main church where they gathered with the rest of the people.

There were also the "devils", guys of all ages covered from head to toe with special costumes so no body can identify them, the reason: They throw flour to all those girls they consider attractive, in reward (must of the times) the girl gets a colorful decorated eggshell.

The guys who has a girlfriend give her a "lira" that's made out of several eggshells and a handkerchief embroidered with a love message all that mounted on a grapefruit.
Music, food stands and dances complement this carnival during 4 days until late every night.

Before we left, the three of us agreed to return next year and rent one of those devil costumes (for only USD $4.5) and live that experience differently. \o/
